Momentum Questions PN and PL’s Transport Visions
Traffic Talk: Momentum Questions PN and PL’s Transport Visions
Imagine this: You’re stuck in traffic on Triq San Ġwann, the sun’s beating down, and you’re wondering, “Where’s the promised relief in these parties’ transport plans?” That’s the question Momentum Malta is asking, as they’ve dismissed both the Nationalist Party (PN) and Labour Party’s (PL) transport proposals as ‘fantasy politics’.
PN’s ‘Fantasy’ Bus Network
The PN’s transport plan, ‘Malta on the Move’, promises a revamped bus network. Momentum, however, argues that the plan lacks credibility. They point out that the PN hasn’t considered how to fund such a massive overhaul, nor have they addressed the current bus drivers’ working conditions. “It’s all well and good to promise a better bus network,” says a Momentum spokesperson, “but how will they pay for it, and how will they ensure drivers aren’t overworked and underpaid?”
PL’s ‘Unrealistic’ Electric Vehicle Targets
Labour’s ‘Green Transport Revolution’ aims to make Malta’s public transport fully electric by 2030. Momentum, however, calls this target ‘unrealistic’. They argue that the PL hasn’t considered the infrastructure needed to support such a shift. “Where will the charging points come from?” asks the spokesperson. “And who will pay for them? The plan lacks detail and seems more like a wishlist than a credible policy.”
Momentum’s Call for Realism
Momentum isn’t just criticising, they’re also proposing. They’ve called for a realistic, phased approach to transport reform. This includes improving existing services, investing in infrastructure, and gradually introducing cleaner vehicles. They also stress the need for cross-party cooperation on transport issues.
“We need credible plans, not fantasy politics,” says the spokesperson. “We need to improve our transport system, but we also need to be realistic about what’s achievable and how we’ll pay for it.”
What Next?
With the next general election just around the corner, transport is set to be a hot topic. Momentum’s critique could force PN and PL to flesh out their plans. But will they take up the challenge? . In the meantime, drivers stuck in traffic on Triq San Ġwann might just be a little more critical of the parties’ promises.
