Motorcyclist Injured in Regional Road Crash: What We Know So Far

Emergency services rushed to the Regional Road in Msida this morning after a motorcyclist was involved in a collision with a car, leaving the rider with serious injuries. The incident, which occurred near the Msida Creek flyover, caused traffic chaos during the peak hour, with commuters facing delays of up to 30 minutes.

What Happened?

The collision, involving a Yamaha motorcycle and a Ford Fiesta, took place around 8:30 AM. Eyewitnesses reported seeing the motorcyclist, a 35-year-old man from Birkirkara, lying on the road with visible injuries. The driver of the car, a 40-year-old woman from Msida, was reportedly shaken but unharmed.

Paramedics from the Malta Civil Protection Department arrived at the scene and stabilised the motorcyclist before transporting him to Mater Dei Hospital. His condition is described as serious but stable. The police have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash.

Traffic Chaos in Msida

The incident caused significant traffic congestion in the area, with commuters reporting delays of up to 30 minutes. Motorists were advised to avoid the area and seek alternative routes. By 10:00 AM, traffic had started to ease as the road was cleared and traffic flow returned to normal.

This is not the first time the Regional Road has been the scene of a serious traffic incident. Last year, a pedestrian was seriously injured after being hit by a car near the same flyover. Local residents have been calling for improved road safety measures in the area.

Road Safety in Malta: A Growing Concern

Malta’s roads have seen a worrying increase in accidents in recent years. According to the Malta Police, there were 1,472 road traffic accidents in 2020, resulting in 15 fatalities. This is a 10% increase from the previous year. Road safety advocates have been calling for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and improved road infrastructure.

In response to the growing concern, the government has announced plans to invest €50 million in road safety measures over the next five years. These include the installation of more speed cameras, the improvement of road signs, and the construction of more pedestrian crossings.

However, some critics argue that more needs to be done to address the root causes of road accidents, such as driver distraction and speeding. They call for stricter penalties and better driver education.

What’s Next?

As the investigation into the Msida crash continues, the police are appealing for any witnesses to come forward. The motorcyclist remains in hospital, and his family has asked for privacy at this time.

In the meantime, road safety advocates are using this incident to renew their calls for improved road safety. “This could have happened to anyone,” said a spokesperson for the Malta Road Safety Council. “We need to do more to make our roads safer for everyone.”
