PN Unveils €1.4B Metro Plan for Malta
Malta’s Metro Dream: PN Unveils €1.4 Billion, Five-Year Plan
Imagine this: you’re standing at the bustling Republic Street in Valletta, the heart of Malta’s capital. Instead of the usual traffic jam, you hear the hum of electric buses and the soft whoosh of a metro train gliding into the station. This isn’t a scene from a futuristic movie, but a vision that the Nationalist Party (PN) has for Malta, as they recently unveiled a €1.4 billion, five-year plan for a new metro system.
From Vision to Reality: The Metro Plan
The PN’s plan, titled ‘Malta Metro 2030’, aims to transform Malta’s public transport system by 2030. The project includes a 15-kilometre metro line connecting key areas like Valletta, Msida, Birkirkara, and Paola. The metro will be integrated with existing bus routes, creating a seamless, efficient public transport network.
But this isn’t just about convenience. The PN sees the metro as a solution to Malta’s traffic congestion and air pollution issues. With a target of 500,000 daily passengers, the metro aims to take cars off the road, reducing emissions and noise pollution. It’s a bold step towards a greener, less congested Malta.
Funding and Timeline: Making it Happen
The €1.4 billion budget for the project will come from a mix of public and private funding. The PN plans to secure EU funds, attract foreign investment, and also allocate local funds. The project will be implemented in phases, with the first phase expected to start in 2025 and be completed by 2030.
But the PN isn’t stopping at the metro. The plan also includes upgrades to bus infrastructure, a new ferry service between Valletta and the Three Cities, and a bike-sharing system. It’s a comprehensive approach to overhaul Malta’s public transport system.
Challenges and Next Steps
While the plan is ambitious, it’s not without challenges. Land acquisition, public support, and political will are just a few of the hurdles the PN will need to overcome. But the party is confident, with PN leader Bernard Grech stating, “We are ready to deliver a modern, efficient public transport system that Malta deserves.”
The PN has invited the public and other political parties to discuss and contribute to the plan. With the next general election due in 2023, the metro plan is set to be a key talking point in Malta’s political scene.
