Drama in Valletta: Rape Suspect’s Bold Escape Bid Foiled

In the heart of Malta’s capital, a dramatic scene unfolded yesterday as a rape suspect, who had been granted bail, attempted a daring escape from the clutches of the law. The man, identified as 35-year-old Joseph Camilleri, was rearrested after a high-speed chase through the bustling streets of Valletta.

From Freedom to Flight

Camilleri, who had been charged with rape and was out on bail, saw his temporary freedom as an opportunity to evade justice. On Wednesday afternoon, as he walked out of the law courts in Valletta, he spotted a chance to flee. He dashed towards the busy Republic Street, weaving through tourists and locals alike, in a desperate bid to escape.

Witnesses described the scene as chaotic. “It was like something out of a movie,” said Maria, a shopkeeper on Republic Street. “One moment he was walking out of the courts, the next he was sprinting down the street, pushing people out of the way.”

Pursuit through the Capital

The police, caught off guard initially, swiftly gave chase. A high-speed pursuit ensued, with Camilleri dashing through the narrow streets of Valletta, past the iconic Grandmaster’s Palace and St. John’s Co-Cathedral. The police, with the help of the public, managed to corner him near the historic Fort St. Elmo.

“I was having a coffee at Giuseppino’s when I saw the chase,” said Tony, a local resident. “I quickly called the police and directed them towards him. It was a tense few minutes, but I’m glad they caught him.”

Camilleri was eventually apprehended and taken back into custody. The police praised the public’s assistance in the matter, stating that their quick thinking and help had prevented a potentially dangerous criminal from evading justice.
