Rape Suspect’s Dramatic Escape Attempt in Valletta

In the heart of Malta’s capital, a man accused of rape made a daring bid for freedom, only to be recaptured within hours. The incident, which unfolded in broad daylight, has left Valletta residents and authorities on high alert.

Escape in the Streets of Valletta

The suspect, identified as 32-year-old Maltese national Mario Azzopardi, was being escorted by police officers from the law courts in Republic Street to the Corradino Correctional Facility around noon yesterday. In a sudden move, Azzopardi wrenched his hand free from one of the officers and dashed towards the bustling streets, startling passersby and causing a brief panic.

Witnesses reported seeing the handcuffed man sprinting towards St. George’s Square, where he attempted to blend into the crowd. “It all happened so fast,” said Joseph, a local shopkeeper who witnessed the scene. “I’ve never seen anything like it in Valletta.”

Manhunt and Recapture

Police quickly launched a manhunt, cordoning off parts of the city and appealing to the public for assistance. Within hours, Azzopardi was spotted near the Grandmaster’s Palace and apprehended by a team of officers. A police spokesperson confirmed that Azzopardi was recaptured without further incident and is now back in custody.

This isn’t Azzopardi’s first brush with the law. He was initially arrested in May following an allegation of rape, and has been in custody since. His trial is set to begin later this year.

Reactions and Safety Concerns

Valletta residents have expressed concern over the incident, with many calling for stricter measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future. “We shouldn’t have to worry about this kind of thing happening in our city,” said Maria, a local resident. “I hope the authorities take this seriously and beef up security.”

In response, the police have assured the public that they are reviewing their escort procedures and will be implementing changes to prevent such incidents from happening again.

“We regret any distress caused to the public by this incident,” said a police spokesperson. “We want to assure everyone that we are committed to maintaining the safety and security of our communities.”
