Stadium wall dismantled with no permit ahead of Labour mass meeting
Walls Come Tumbling Down: Stadium’s Demolition Raises Eyebrows Ahead of Labour Gathering
Early morning joggers along the Msida promenade did a double-take yesterday as they witnessed a spectacle that’s become all too familiar in Malta’s political scene – a wall coming down. But this wasn’t just any wall; it was the iconic one surrounding the National Stadium, and its sudden dismantling has sparked a flurry of questions.
No Permit, No Problem? Not Quite
The Malta Developers Association (MDA) has confirmed that no permit was issued for the demolition of the wall, which has stood sentinel around the Ta’ Qali sports complex for decades. This has raised eyebrows, given the strict planning regulations that govern such structures in Malta. The MDA’s spokesperson told Hot Malta, “We’re looking into this matter. While we respect the right to develop, we also uphold the rule of law.”
Labour’s Gathering Storm
Coinciding with the wall’s demise is the upcoming Labour Party mass meeting, set to take place at the stadium this weekend. The Party’s secretary, Clint Camilleri, dismissed suggestions of any connection, stating, “The wall’s condition had deteriorated. It was a safety hazard and had to go. Any insinuations otherwise are baseless.”
However, Opposition MP Jason Azzopardi has called for an investigation, arguing, “The timing is suspect. We need to ensure there’s no abuse of power here.”
Ta’ Qali: A Tale of Two Walls
Ironically, just last year, another wall at Ta’ Qali made headlines – the one that sprang up around the controversial petting zoo. That wall, too, was erected without permits, sparking a similar outcry. Now, with the stadium’s wall gone, some are wondering if Ta’ Qali is becoming a symbol of Malta’s murky planning scene.
Hot Malta has reached out to the Planning Authority and the Environment and Resources Authority for comment. We’ll keep you updated as this story develops.
