Żurrieq’s €6M Community Hub: A Beacon of Progress in the Making
Imagine strolling along Żurrieq’s bustling Triq il-Kbira, the aroma of fresh bread from the local bakery wafting through the air. Now, picture a vibrant, state-of-the-art community hub standing tall at the heart of this picturesque village. This is not a distant dream, but a €6 million reality that Żurrieq’s local council is bringing to life.
Revitalising Żurrieq’s Heart
Żurrieq, a gem nestled in the south of Malta, is set to receive a significant facelift with the construction of a new community hub. The project, estimated at €6 million, aims to transform the current dilapidated building at the corner of Triq il-Kbira and Triq l-Indipendenza into a modern, inclusive space that caters to the needs of Żurrieq’s residents and visitors alike.
The new hub will span over 1,200 square metres, offering a range of facilities including a library, a community hall, offices for local NGOs, and a rooftop terrace with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The project is not just about bricks and mortar; it’s about fostering a sense of community and belonging.
More Than Just a Building
The community hub is designed to be a focal point for Żurrieq, a space that brings people together, encourages learning, and promotes cultural exchange. The library, for instance, will not only house a collection of books but also serve as a digital learning centre, providing free internet access and computer facilities for those in need.
The community hall, with its flexible layout, will host a variety of events – from art exhibitions and concerts to workshops and classes. It will be a space where Żurrieq’s rich cultural heritage can be celebrated and shared, while also providing a venue for community gatherings and celebrations.
Sustainability at the Core
In line with Żurrieq’s commitment to sustainability, the community hub will be designed to meet high environmental standards. The building will incorporate energy-efficient technologies, such as solar panels and rainwater harvesting systems, reducing its carbon footprint and lowering operating costs in the long run.
The project also includes the restoration of the historic façade of the existing building, preserving Żurrieq’s architectural heritage while embracing modern design principles. The rooftop terrace, with its green roof and seating areas, will provide a peaceful retreat from the bustle of the village below, offering stunning views of the surrounding countryside and the sea.
The Żurrieq Local Council has already secured €4 million in funding for the project, with the remaining €2 million expected to be approved in the upcoming budget. The council aims to start construction in late 2023, with completion scheduled for 2025.
Żurrieq’s Mayor, Dr. Josianne Cutajar, expressed her excitement about the project, stating, “This community hub will be a breakthrough for Żurrieq. It will not only provide much-needed facilities but also serve as a symbol of our village’s progress and unity.”
As Żurrieq looks to the future, the community hub stands as a testament to the village’s commitment to growth, sustainability, and community spirit. It’s not just a building; it’s a promise of a brighter, more connected Żurrieq.
