Żurrieq’s €6m Community Hub: A Vision for the Future
Żurrieq’s €6m Vision: A Community Hub Takes Shape
Picture this: the quaint village square of Żurrieq, a place where time seems to have slowed down. Now, imagine it bustling with life, a hub of activity, a place where the community can come together. This is not a distant dream, but a reality that Żurrieq council is working towards, with plans to invest €6 million in a new community hub.
Revitalising Żurrieq’s Heart
The heart of Żurrieq, like many traditional Maltese villages, is its square. Known locally as Il-Medina, it’s where life unfolds – from the daily market to the lively festas. But the council wants to do more. They envision a space that caters to the community’s needs, a place that brings people together, and a hub that can host events and activities year-round.
“We want to create a space that’s not just a square, but a community centre,” explains Żurrieq Mayor, Stephen Zammit. “A place where people can meet, learn, and enjoy various activities.”
What’s in Store?
The €6 million project, set to start in 2023, includes a multi-purpose hall, a library, a youth centre, and a senior citizens’ lounge. There are also plans for a new market area, with stalls designed to blend in with the traditional architecture. But the council is also looking to the future, with proposals for a green space and a charging station for electric vehicles.
But this isn’t just about bricks and mortar. The council is involving the community, holding meetings and surveys to understand what Żurrieq’s residents want and need. “We want this to be a space that truly belongs to the community,” says Zammit.
Preserving Żurrieq’s Character
Żurrieq is known for its unique character, from the ancient temples of Mnajdra and Ġġantija to the winding streets lined with traditional Maltese houses. The council is committed to preserving this character while creating a modern, functional space.
“We’re working with architects to ensure that the new hub blends in with the existing architecture,” says Zammit. “We want to respect our heritage while creating a space that’s fit for the future.”
Once completed, the Żurrieq community hub will be a testament to what can be achieved when a community comes together. It will be a space that reflects Żurrieq’s rich history while looking towards the future, a place where people can meet, learn, and grow together.
As Zammit puts it, “This is not just a project, it’s a vision for Żurrieq’s future. And we’re excited to see it come to life.”
