In the early hours of Tuesday, police swooped in on a St. Julian’s apartment, arresting a man and seizing a substantial amount of heroin with an estimated street value of €13,000. The bust, carried out by the Drug Squad, has through the local community, known for its vibrant nightlife and tourist hotspots.
From Street to Cell: The Arrest
The 35-year-old suspect, a Maltese national, was taken into custody following a search warrant executed at his residence in the bustling St. Julian’s area. Police found 65 grams of heroin, ready for distribution, hidden in the apartment. The drugs were packaged in individual doses, indicating a well-established network.
Unraveling the Network: The Investigation
Inspector Joseph Muscat, leading the investigation, told Hot Malta, “This is a significant blow to the local drug trade. We believe the suspect was part of a larger network, and we’re working tirelessly to identify and apprehend his associates.” The suspect is being held at the Cottonera Police Headquarters, assisting police with their inquiries.
St. Julian’s, a popular tourist destination, has seen an increase in drug-related incidents in recent years. Local councillor, Mario Vella, expressed his concern, “We’re working closely with the police to ensure St. Julian’s remains a safe place for both residents and tourists. This arrest sends a strong message that drug dealing will not be tolerated.”
