Eastern Malta: A New Dawn for Heritage as Restoration Grants Arrive

Imagine strolling down the cobbled streets of Żejtun, the aroma of fresh bread wafting from the local bakery, and looking up to see a once-neglected historic building restored to its former glory. This is not a distant dream, but a reality on the horizon for eastern Malta as the final phase of the national restoration grant scheme rolls in.

From North to South: A Journey of Revitalisation

The scheme, initiated by the Malta Arts Council, has been a journey of revitalisation, moving from the north to the south of the island. Żebbuġ, Rabat, and Mdina have already seen their historic cores transformed, with crumbling buildings restored and repurposed as cultural hubs, homes, and businesses. Now, it’s the eastern region’s turn.

Zejtun, Marsaxlokk, and Beyond: Breathing Life into Heritage

The eastern region, with its rich history and unique character, is set to benefit from the final tranche of grants. Żejtun, with its Baroque architecture and winding streets, is a prime candidate. The grand Palazzo Parisio, once a symbol of Żejtun’s opulence, is among the buildings earmarked for restoration. In Marsaxlokk, the historic fish market could be transformed into a vibrant community space, preserving the town’s fishing heritage while catering to its growing tourist appeal.

But the scheme isn’t just about aesthetics. It’s about breathing life into these historic spaces, creating jobs, and fostering community pride. “This is more than just a facelift,” says Dr. Joseph Mizzi, head of the Malta Arts Council. “It’s about creating sustainable, vibrant communities that respect and celebrate their heritage.”

For local residents like Maria, a Żejtun native, the changes can’t come soon enough. “I’ve seen our town decline over the years,” she says. “But with these restorations, I see hope. I see our history being valued, and our community being revitalised.”
