Eastern Malta’s Heritage Revived in Final Phase of Restoration Scheme

Eastern Malta: Last in Line, First in Heart

In the quaint village of Żejtun, nestled between the ancient church and the bustling main street, lies a testament to Malta’s rich history. The 17th-century Palazzo Falzon, a once-neglected gem, is now undergoing a remarkable transformation. Why? Because it’s one of the latest beneficiaries of Malta’s national restoration grants scheme, finally reaching the eastern region in its final phase.

Reviving the East: A Tale of Two Villages

Żejtun and its neighbour, Marsaxlokk, are no strangers to tourism. Yet, their historic cores often took a backseat to the island’s more prominent towns. Now, with the final phase of the restoration scheme, these villages are set to reclaim their architectural heritage and draw visitors to their unique charm.

In Żejtun, Palazzo Falzon is not the only beneficiary. The historic Casa Bernard is also receiving a facelift, thanks to the €15,000 grant it secured. Meanwhile, in Marsaxlokk, the iconic Tal-Petrox Church is set to regain its former glory, with a €20,000 grant earmarked for its restoration.

More Than Bricks and Mortar

The restoration scheme, launched in 2018, is about more than just preserving Malta’s architectural heritage. It’s about reviving communities, boosting local economies, and fostering a sense of pride among residents. With the final phase now underway, eastern Malta is finally getting its turn in the spotlight.

For Żejtun’s Mayor, David Cassar, the scheme is a breakthrough. “These restorations aren’t just about preserving our past,” he says, “they’re about investing in our future. They’ll bring visitors, boost our local businesses, and give our young people a reason to stay.”

And it’s not just about the big projects. The scheme also offers smaller grants for private homeowners to restore their traditional Maltese balconies and facades. In Marsaxlokk’s narrow streets, the transformation is already visible, with once-drab houses now sporting bright shutters and freshly painted doors.
