Heroin Seizure: Man Granted Bail After Police Find 120g in Ħamrun
In a quiet, unassuming street of Ħamrun, a bustling town just minutes from Malta’s capital, police made a significant drug seizure this week. A man, identified as 32-year-old Matthew A., was arrested after officers found 120 grams of heroin hidden in his apartment. The discovery has left locals stunned, with many wondering how such a large quantity of drugs could have been hidden in their midst.
Operation Leads to Arrest and Seizure
Police launched an operation following a tip-off about suspected drug activity in the area. After conducting surveillance, they obtained a warrant to search Matthew A.’s apartment on Triq San Ġużepp. There, they discovered the heroin, packaged and ready for distribution. Matthew was arrested on the spot and taken into custody.
Superintendent of Ħamrun Police Station, Mark Spiteri, commented, “This seizure is a significant blow to the local drug trade. We’re committed to keeping Ħamrun safe, and operations like this show that we’re serious about our duty.”
Man Granted Bail Amidst Ongoing Investigation
Matthew A. was granted bail on Thursday, with the court setting a number of conditions, including a ban on leaving Malta and a curfew from 8 PM to 6 AM. The case has been adjourned until next month, giving police more time to investigate and gather evidence.
Local residents have reacted with relief to the seizure but also expressed concern about the presence of drugs in their community. “It’s worrying to think this was happening so close to home,” said one resident, who wished to remain anonymous. “But I’m glad the police acted quickly and took him off the streets.”
As the investigation continues, police are appealing to anyone with information about drug activity in Ħamrun to come forward. They can be contacted at Ħamrun Police Station on 21242000.
