Heroin Seizure in Ħamrun: Police Arrest Man Over €13,000 Worth of Drugs
In the heart of Ħamrun, a bustling town just outside Valletta, police officers from the Drug Squad made a seizure that would send shockwaves through the local underworld. Hidden in a nondescript apartment on Triq San Pawl, they discovered a stash of heroin, enough to flood the streets with €13,000 worth of the deadly drug.
From Tip-Off to Arrest
It all started with a tip-off, as many significant busts do. The police received intelligence about a suspect in Ħamrun, and the Drug Squad was quick to act. They set up surveillance, watching the apartment on Triq San Pawl, a quiet street filled with old, traditional Maltese houses. For days, officers observed the comings and goings, building their case.
On Tuesday morning, they moved in. A team of officers, led by Insp. Joe Xuereb, stormed the apartment. Inside, they found the suspect, a 35-year-old man from Ħamrun, along with the heroin. The man was arrested on the spot, and the drugs were seized.
Heroin Worth €13,000
The heroin, weighing in at 130 grams, had an estimated street value of €13,000. This is a significant seizure, according to Insp. Xuereb. “This amount of heroin could have caused a lot of harm on our streets,” he said. “We’re glad we could intercept it before it reached the hands of users.”
The drugs were taken to the Forensic Science Laboratory for analysis. The suspect was taken to the police headquarters in Floriana for questioning. As of now, no further details about the suspect or the investigation have been released.
Community Reaction
News of the bust spread quickly through Ħamrun. Residents, many of whom were unaware of the drug activity happening in their midst, breathed a sigh of relief. “We’re glad the police are on top of this,” said Marie Claire, a local shop owner. “We want Ħamrun to be a safe place for our children to grow up.”
Others praised the police for their diligence. “They’ve been watching the place for days,” said Tony, a retired man sitting outside a nearby café. “You have to admire their patience and commitment.”
