Malta: More Teens Seek Police Help Against Sexual Exploitation

Teen Outreach: A New Wave of Awareness

In the heart of Malta, at the Floriana Police Station, a trend is emerging. More teens are walking through those iconic blue doors, seeking help. They’re not there for petty crimes or mischief, but to report something far more serious – sexual exploitation.

Numbers on the Rise

The Malta Police Force has seen an increase in minors coming forward with allegations against a man recently charged with sexual exploitation. The numbers are climbing, with a 20% increase in reports compared to last year. This surge in teen outreach is a stark reminder of the challenges our youth face today.

Local Support and Action

Local NGOs like ‘Drachma’ and ‘KOPIN’ have stepped up their efforts, offering counseling and support services. They’ve set up shop at the Floriana Youth Centre, making it easier for teens to access help. The government, too, is taking notice. Education Minister, Evarist Bartolo, has announced plans to integrate sexual health and online safety into school curriculums.

“We’re seeing a shift,” says Inspector Mario Azzopardi, Floriana Police Station’s Youth Liaison Officer. “Teens are more aware, more willing to speak out. It’s a positive change, but it also underscores the need for continued support and education.”

The increase in reports also highlights the importance of community involvement. “It’s not just about the police or NGOs,” says Azzopardi. “It’s about every adult in Malta looking out for our youth, encouraging them to speak up, and knowing where to turn for help.”

So, what can you do? If you suspect a minor is in danger, report it. Contact the Police on 112 or 119. For support and counseling, reach out to Drachma (21221000) or KOPIN (21232200). Let’s stand together, protecting our youth, one step at a time.
