Malta’s Olive Trees Tell Their Stories Through Art

Trees with Tales: Unveiling Malta’s Living History

Ever wondered about the stories hidden within Malta’s ancient olive trees? Nestled in the heart of Żejtun, a town known for its rich history and cultural heritage, lies a unique art installation that breathes life into these silent sentinels. “Tree Stories” is an innovative project that transforms these gnarled, wise old trees into canvases for local artists, offering a fresh perspective on Malta’s living history.

From Olive Groves to Art Galleries

Żejtun, which means ‘olive’ in Maltese, has long been associated with these hardy trees. The town’s olive groves have provided sustenance and livelihood for generations, and their silvery leaves have witnessed centuries of Maltese history. Now, thanks to the creative vision of local artist and project coordinator, Alexia Pace, these trees are sharing their stories in a novel way.

“Tree Stories” was launched in 2019, transforming Żejtun’s olive groves into an open-air art gallery. Pace invited local artists to create site-specific artworks that engage with the trees’ history, their cultural significance, and the broader environmental narrative. The result is a captivating blend of art, history, and nature that invites visitors to explore Żejtun’s olive groves in a whole new light.

Art that Grows with the Trees

Each artwork in “Tree Stories” is a unique response to the tree it adorns, reflecting the artist’s interpretation of its history and significance. Some pieces are bold and eye-catching, like Daniel Cilia’s “The Olive Tree of Żejtun,” which wraps a tree in a vibrant, hand-painted mural. Others are more subtle, like Dorianne Mamo’s “Rooted,” a delicate installation of hand-stitched fabric leaves that blend seamlessly with the tree’s natural foliage.

What makes “Tree Stories” so compelling is its ephemeral nature. These artworks are not meant to last forever; they grow and change with the trees, weathering the elements and evolving over time. Some pieces have already faded or been removed, making way for new artworks that continue the story.

For Pace, the transient nature of the project is part of its appeal. “It’s about capturing a moment in time,” she explains. “The artworks will change and eventually disappear, just like the trees themselves. But the stories they tell will remain, etched into the memory of those who experienced them.”

Exploring Żejtun’s Olive Groves

To experience “Tree Stories” for yourself, head to Żejtun’s olive groves. The easiest way to access them is from Triq il-Kbira (Main Street), where you’ll find signs pointing towards the “Tree Stories” trail. The trail winds through the groves, guiding you to each artwork with the help of a simple map available at the Żejtun Local Council offices.

As you explore, take your time to appreciate the artworks and the trees that inspire them. Consider the stories they tell, and the many more that remain untold. And remember, as you wander through Żejtun’s olive groves, you’re not just walking through a town – you’re walking through a living, breathing history book, illustrated with the vibrant, creative spirit of Malta’s artistic community.
