3 Rescued After Ġnejna Cave Misadventure
Stranded No More: Ġnejna Cave’s Drama Unfolds
Three hikers found themselves in a pickle last weekend, not far from the iconic Ġnejna cave. The group, consisting of two locals and a tourist, had set out to explore the rugged southwest coast but underestimated the terrain and the setting sun.
When the Tide Turned
The trio had ventured into the Ġnejna cave, a popular spot for both locals and tourists, but as the tide began to rise, they found themselves cut off from the shore. The cave, a fascinating remnant of Malta’s rich history, can be a trap for the unwary, as the sea level can rise rapidly, blocking the exit.
Realizing their predicament, they tried to make their way back to the shore, but the rising water and slippery rocks made it impossible. They were stranded, with no choice but to wait for help. Their only lifeline was a mobile phone signal, which they used to call for assistance.
Rescue Mission: Malta’s Civil Protection Department Steps In
The Malta Civil Protection Department (CPD) received the call and swiftly sprang into action. A team was dispatched to the scene, equipped with inflatable boats and other rescue gear. They navigated the choppy waters, making their way to the cave entrance where the hikers were waiting, cold and anxious but otherwise unharmed.
The CPD team, led by Inspector Joseph Vella, praised the hikers’ quick thinking in calling for help. “They did the right thing by staying calm and using their phone to call us,” he said. “This could have ended very differently if they had panicked.”
Once rescued, the hikers were taken to the nearby Ħaġar Qim complex, where they were checked by medical personnel. They were cold and shaken but none the worse for wear, thanks to the timely intervention of the CPD.
Lessons Learned: Safety First on Malta’s Trails
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safety when hiking, especially in areas prone to tidal changes like Ġnejna. The CPD advises hikers to check tide times before setting out, stick to marked trails, and always carry a fully charged phone.
Ġnejna, with its stunning views and rich history, is a magnet for hikers and nature lovers. But it’s a wild, untamed place that demands respect. As one local hiker put it, “It’s a beautiful spot, but it’s not a playground. You’ve got to know your limits and plan ahead.”
