New Guard for Malta: 65 AFM Recruits Graduate in Style
In a display of discipline and camaraderie, 65 recruits of the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) marched with pride at the Mtarfa Barracks today, marking the culmination of their rigorous 10-month training programme. The Passing Out Parade, a time-honoured tradition, saw the new guards take their oath and officially join the ranks of Malta’s defence force.
From Civilians to Guards: A Journey of Transformation
The journey of these recruits began in October 2021, when they bid farewell to their civilian lives and embraced the challenges of military training. Over the past 10 months, they have endured gruelling physical fitness tests, mastered combat skills, and honed their discipline under the watchful eyes of their instructors. The transformation was evident today as they stood tall and proud, ready to serve their country.
Among the graduates was Private Daniel Azzopardi, a 22-year-old from Birkirkara who chose to enlist after completing his studies. “It was tough,” he admitted, “but every challenge we faced brought us closer together. Today, I feel a sense of accomplishment and I’m ready to serve.”
A Show of Strength and Unity
The Passing Out Parade was a spectacle of military precision and unity. The recruits, dressed in their ceremonial uniforms, marched in perfect sync, their boots echoing a rhythmic drumbeat on the tarmac. They were inspected by the Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General Jeffrey Curmi, who praised their dedication and resilience.
Lieutenant General Curmi addressed the graduates, “You have proven yourselves to be a credit to your families and to Malta. Today, you join a proud tradition of service and sacrifice. I have no doubt that you will uphold the highest standards of the AFM.”
The parade concluded with a march past, where the graduates saluted their commanding officers and the national flag, a symbol of their commitment to Malta and its people.
