Abela Fights for Malta’s EU Interests
Abela’s EU Push: Cohesion Funding and Migration Coordination
Malta’s Prime Minister Robert Abela found himself in the heart of Brussels this week, advocating for the island nation’s interests at the European Council summit. As leaders from the 27 EU member states gathered at the Justus Lipsius building, Abela was vocal about two key priorities: securing cohesion funding and coordinating migration policies.
Cohesion Funding: Malta’s Fair Share
Malta, with its strategic location and unique challenges, has long argued for a fair share of the EU’s cohesion funds. These funds, designed to reduce disparities between member states, are now up for grabs as the EU’s long-term budget and NextGenerationEU recovery plan take shape. Abela was clear about Malta’s needs:
“Malta deserves its fair share of the cohesion funds. We are a small country with big responsibilities, and we need the EU’s support to tackle our specific challenges,” Abela said.
With projects like the Marsa Sports Campus and the Smart City in Malta’s pipeline, Abela is pushing for funds that will drive growth and create jobs. The Prime Minister also emphasized the need for flexibility in fund allocation, given Malta’s unique circumstances.
Migration: A Coordinated EU Approach
Migration was another hot topic on the summit’s agenda, with Abela calling for a coordinated EU approach. Malta, often the first point of entry for migrants crossing the Mediterranean, has long called for burden-sharing among EU member states:
“Malta cannot be left alone to deal with this challenge. We need a fair and sustainable solution that involves all EU member states,” Abela stated.
The Prime Minister also raised the issue of search and rescue operations in the Mediterranean, urging EU leaders to ensure the safety of migrants while respecting Malta’s concerns. Abela’s call comes amidst ongoing discussions about reforming the Dublin Regulation, which governs asylum procedures in the EU.
Back home in Malta, the Prime Minister’s EU push has been met with both support and criticism. While some laud his efforts to secure a fair deal for Malta, others question the government’s EU policies and their impact on the island’s future.
