Cyclist Seriously Injured in Birkirkara Truck Crash
Emergency services rushed to the scene of a serious road accident in Birkirkara this morning, where a cyclist was left critically injured after a collision with a truck.
Accident Details
The incident occurred at around 7:30 AM on Triq San Gwann, near the junction with Triq il-Karmnu. Witnesses reported seeing the cyclist, a 35-year-old man, lying unconscious on the road, his bike badly damaged. The truck, a white Mercedes Actros, was found stationary with its hazard lights flashing.
Rescue and Aftermath
Paramedics from the Malta Civil Protection Department arrived swiftly and stabilised the cyclist’s condition before transporting him to Mater Dei Hospital. His injuries are reported to be serious but not life-threatening. The driver of the truck, a 48-year-old man, was unharmed and cooperated fully with police.
Police Investigation
Birkirkara Police have launched an investigation into the incident. They are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward. Inspector Joseph Vella from Birkirkara Police Station commented, “We urge anyone who may have seen the incident or has information to share to contact us immediately. Every piece of information, no matter how small, could prove vital to our investigation.”
This incident comes amidst ongoing discussions about road safety in Malta, particularly for cyclists and pedestrians. The Malta Cycling Advocacy Group has been campaigning for better infrastructure and stricter enforcement of traffic laws.
