Cyclist Seriously Injured in Msida Truck Crash

Emergency services rushed to the scene of a serious road accident in Msida this morning, where a cyclist was critically injured after colliding with a truck. The incident, which occurred around 7:30 AM on Triq San Pawl, brought traffic to a standstill and left locals shocked.

Cyclist in Critical Condition

The cyclist, a 35-year-old man, was immediately transported to Mater Dei Hospital by ambulance, where he is currently undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit. Police have confirmed that his condition is critical but stable. The driver of the truck, a 45-year-old man, was unharmed and is assisting police with their investigations.

Traffic Chaos in Msida

Triq San Pawl, a major thoroughfare connecting Msida to Birkirkara, was closed for several hours following the incident, causing significant traffic congestion in the area. Diversions were put in place, but commuters and motorists were advised to avoid the area if possible. By 10:00 AM, the road had been reopened, and traffic was gradually returning to normal.

Road Safety Concerns Raised

This incident has once again raised concerns about road safety in Malta, particularly for cyclists who share the roads with heavier vehicles. According to recent statistics from Transport Malta, there were 171 cycling-related accidents in 2020, with 19 resulting in serious injuries. Cyclists and pedestrians have long called for safer infrastructure and stricter enforcement of traffic laws.

In a statement, the Malta Cycling Federation expressed its concern over the incident and called for urgent action to improve road safety. “We urge the authorities to take immediate steps to make our roads safer for cyclists,” the statement read. “This includes investing in cycling infrastructure, educating road users, and strictly enforcing traffic laws.”

Hot Malta has reached out to the Ministry for Transport, Infrastructure, and Capital Projects for a comment on this incident and the broader issue of road safety. We will update this story as more information becomes available.
