Fire Guts Derelict Paceville Nightclub

Blaze Engulfs Former Paceville Nightclub, Raising Questions About Urban Renewal

In the early hours of Tuesday morning, a fire broke out at the derelict former Club 22 in Paceville, sending plumes of smoke into the night sky and reigniting debates about the state of Malta’s urban renewal projects.

Firefighters Battle the Blaze

The Malta Fire Service received a call at around 2:30 AM, dispatching multiple appliances to the scene. Firefighters worked tirelessly to contain the blaze, which spread rapidly through the abandoned nightclub. No injuries were reported, but the building was left severely damaged.

“We received a number of calls from residents and passersby,” said a MFRS spokesperson. “The fire was quite visible from several parts of St. Julian’s.”

Eyes on Urban Renewal Efforts

The fire has once again put the spotlight on Paceville’s urban renewal efforts. The former Club 22 has been a symbol of decay in the once-thriving entertainment district, with locals and officials alike calling for its redevelopment.

Dr. Joseph Muscat, a local historian and urban planning expert, told Hot Malta, “This fire is a stark reminder of the urgent need for action in Paceville. We can’t afford to let these eyesores continue to blight our communities.”

Mayor of St. Julian’s, Boris Cezar, echoed these sentiments, stating, “We’ve been pushing for the redevelopment of this site for years. Incidents like this only strengthen our resolve to see this through.”

The building’s owner, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed regret over the incident but declined to comment further.

: Paceville’s Future

With the fire now extinguished and the site secured, attention turns to the future of the former Club 22. Plans for a mixed-use development, including residential units and retail spaces, were approved last year. However, construction has yet to begin.

Cezar assured residents, “We’re working closely with the relevant authorities to ensure this site is developed as soon as possible. Paceville deserves better, and we’re committed to making that happen.”
