Imagine being perched on the edge of a cliff, the Mediterranean sun beating down, with no way up and no way down. This was the reality for three hikers who found themselves stranded near Ġnejna cave last weekend. The popular hiking spot turned into a trap for the trio, who had underestimated the terrain and the setting sun.

Ġnejna: A Hiker’s Paradise Turned Perilous

Ġnejna, a small coastal village in the southwest of Malta, is a haven for hikers. The rugged coastline, with its dramatic cliffs and hidden caves, offers a challenging yet rewarding experience. However, the area’s remoteness and uneven terrain can quickly turn into a hiker’s worst nightmare, as the three individuals discovered.

The group, consisting of two locals and a tourist, had set off in the morning, equipped with water, snacks, and a map. They had planned to hike the coastal path, explore Ġnejna cave, and return before sunset. But as the day wore on, they found themselves lost, with the sun dipping lower in the sky.

Rescue Mission: A Race Against the Setting Sun

As the group realized their predicament, they tried to retrace their steps but found the path blocked by steep drops and dense vegetation. With no signal to call for help, they had to rely on each other and their wits. Luckily, one of them had a whistle, which they used to attract the attention of passing boats.

The Coast Guard, alerted by a concerned boater, launched a rescue mission. Using a helicopter and a rigid inflatable boat, they located the stranded hikers and airlifted them to safety. The operation took over two hours, with the rescue team battling against the fading light and strong winds.

“We were lucky,” said one of the rescued hikers, “The Coast Guard was our guardian angel. We had underestimated the terrain and the time it would take to hike back. It was a harsh lesson learned.”
