Malta Remembers James Burrows, TV Legend with Local Ties
Malta’s Own Connection to TV Legend James Burrows
As the news of James Burrows’ passing at 85 rippled through the global TV industry, Malta found itself with a unique connection to the man who directed some of the most iconic sitcoms of our time. Burrows, a seven-time Emmy winner, helmed episodes of ‘Friends’, ‘Cheers’, and ‘Frasier’, among many others. But did you know he also had a hand in shaping the local TV scene?
From Hollywood to the Mediterranean
In the early 2000s, Burrows was involved in a TV project based in Malta. ‘The Investigator’, a crime drama series, was set to film on the island, with Burrows attached as an executive producer. While the series never materialized, his interest in Malta left an indelible mark on the local industry. “It was an exciting time,” recalls local producer, Joe Mifsud. “Having someone of Burrows’ caliber show interest in Malta was a boost for our industry.”
Legacy in Malta’s TV Scene
Burrows’ influence extended beyond ‘The Investigator’. His directing style, known for its fast pace and sharp humor, inspired a generation of local directors. “We studied his work, his cuts, his timing,” says Maltese director, Stephen Oliver. “He taught us so much about storytelling and comedy, even from afar.”
Today, Burrows’ legacy lives on in Malta’s vibrant TV scene. From local sitcoms to international co-productions, his influence can be seen in the quick wit and clever camera work that defines modern Maltese television. As we remember James Burrows, let’s also celebrate the impact he had on our little island in the Mediterranean.
