Malta’s Fading Street Art: Have We Lost Our Lustre?

Malta’s Street Art: A Fading Canvas?

Tucked away in the narrow alleys of Valletta, the once vibrant street art scene seems to be losing its lustre. The capital’s walls, once a colourful mix local and international talent, now bear silent witness to a decline that’s hard to ignore.

From Vibrant to Faded

Remember the days when you’d stroll down St. Lucy Street and be greeted by a kaleidoscope of colours and stories? The ‘Mural Festa’ in 2015 brought international artists to Malta, transforming our streets into an open-air gallery. But fast forward to today, and many of those murals are faded, tagged, or simply gone.

Take the iconic ‘Lovin’ Malta’ mural on Old Bakery Street. Once a symbol of the island’s love for street art, it’s now a shadow of its former self, its vibrancy dulled by time and neglect. This isn’t an isolated case. Drive down to Msida, and you’ll find the once stunning ‘Sea of Tranquility’ mural, now a mere ghost of its former glory.

What Happened to Our Street Art?

So, what’s behind this decline? Part of the problem is the lack of maintenance. Street art is meant to be temporary, but with no clear policy on upkeep, many murals are left to fade away. Then there’s the issue of funding. With budgets tight, local councils often struggle to commission new pieces.

But it’s not all doom and gloom. Initiatives like ‘Valletta 2018’ and ‘Notte Bianca’ have shown that when we invest in street art, it can transform our public spaces and attract tourists. So, why not build on this success?

Let’s not forget, street art is more than just pretty pictures. It’s a reflection of our culture, a tool for social commentary, and a way to breathe life into our urban landscapes. It’s high time we start valuing it as such.
