Train Tragedy: Malta Resident Among Injured in UK Collision
Early this morning, the Maltese community in the UK woke up to grim news. A resident from our sunny islands was among the 89 injured when two trains collided north of London, leaving one person dead and many more fighting for their lives.
What Happened?
The incident occurred around 8:10 AM local time on Tuesday, near the town of Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire. Initial reports suggest that a passenger train collided with a freight train, causing significant damage and chaos. Emergency services rushed to the scene, with eyewitnesses describing a scene of devastation.
Among the injured is a 35-year-old Maltese national, currently being treated at the Royal London Hospital. While their condition is stable, the news has through the close-knit Maltese community in the UK.
Malta’s Response
Malta’s High Commissioner to the UK, Mike Zammit, has confirmed that the Maltese resident is receiving consular assistance. In a statement, he said, “Our thoughts are with the victims and their families. We’re doing everything we can to support our citizen at this difficult time.”
Locally, Maltese politicians have expressed their condolences. Opposition Leader Bernard Grech tweeted, “Our hearts go out to the victims and their families. We’re thinking of you, Malta.”
Meanwhile, the Maltese community in the UK is rallying around the injured Maltese national. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help with medical expenses and other costs, with many expressing their solidarity on social media.
What’s Next?
The cause of the collision is still under investigation. The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) has been deployed to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash. British Transport Police have also launched an investigation.
In the meantime, the Maltese community in the UK is calling for increased safety measures on UK railways. “We’ve had enough,” said one Maltese resident in London. “Something needs to change.”
Back in Malta, the government is urging anyone affected by the incident to reach out to the Maltese High Commission in London for support.
