Train Tragedy: Maltese Student Among Injured in UK Collision

In the quiet, picturesque town of Peterborough, north of London, the tranquility was shattered on Tuesday morning as two trains collided, leaving one person dead and 89 injured. Among the injured is Maltese student, Daniel Azzopardi, a 20-year-old studying at the University of Cambridge.

What Happened?

The incident occurred around 7:45 AM local time when a passenger train and a freight train collided head-on near the town’s train station. The passenger train, en route from London to Stansted Airport, was packed with commuters and students, including Daniel, who was heading to his early morning lecture.

Emergency services rushed to the scene, with eyewitnesses reporting a chaotic scene of twisted metal and injured passengers. The dead person was a passenger on the commuter train, while the injuries ranged from minor to serious. Daniel suffered a broken leg and is currently recovering in Peterborough City Hospital.

Local Connection: Daniel’s Story

Daniel, a resident of Msida, Malta, moved to the UK last year to pursue his dreams of studying Computer Science. His mother, Maria Azzopardi, a teacher at St. Martin’s College in Swieqi, was devastated by the news but relieved that her son’s injuries were not life-threatening.

“I spoke to Daniel this morning,” Maria told Hot Malta over the phone. “He’s in pain, but he’s strong. He’s thinking of all his friends and family back home. We’re just grateful it wasn’t worse.”

Daniel’s friends in Malta have been rallying around him, setting up a GoFundMe page to help with his medical expenses and travel costs once he’s able to return home. As of writing, the page has already raised over €2,000.

Investigation and Aftermath

British Transport Police and the Rail Accident Investigation Branch are currently investigating the cause of the collision. The train operator, Greater Anglia, has launched an internal investigation and has offered its support to those affected.

In the meantime, the Maltese government has offered its condolences to the family of the deceased and wished Daniel and the other injured passengers a speedy recovery. The Maltese Embassy in London is providing consular assistance to Daniel and his family.

Daniel’s accident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers of rail travel and the importance of safety measures. It also underscores the close ties between Malta and the UK, with thousands of Maltese students and workers calling the UK their second home.

As Daniel recovers in a Peterborough hospital, his friends and family back home in Malta are rallying around him, ready to welcome him back with open arms once he’s able to return.
