Mozart’s Lost Aria Found in Malta’s National Library

In the heart of Valletta, amidst the hushed atmosphere of the National Library of Malta, a French curator has stumbled upon a musical treasure that has remained hidden for over two centuries. The manuscript, a rare composition by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, was found nestled among a pile of anonymous scores, its true value unrecognized until now.

Unveiling the Hidden Melody

Dr. Élodie Bertrand, a specialist in 18th-century music from the Musée de la Musique in Paris, was in Malta to study the library’s collection when she came across the manuscript. “I was going through the stacks, looking for something else entirely, when this score caught my eye,” she recalls. “It was the handwriting that first struck me – it was unmistakably Mozart’s.”

The manuscript, dated 1781, is a previously unknown aria for soprano, titled “L’Amante Ingrato” (The Unfaithful Lover). It is believed to have been written during Mozart’s time in Milan, where he was engaged as a theatre composer. How it ended up in Malta is still a mystery, but it’s not the first time the island has played host to such musical secrets. In the 19th century, Malta was a popular stopover for musicians traveling between Europe and the Middle East, providing ample opportunity for such exchanges to occur.

Malta’s Musical Heritage Revealed

News of the discovery has sent ripples of excitement through the local music scene. “This is a significant find,” says Dr. Joseph Vella, a Maltese musicologist. “It adds another piece to the puzzle of Mozart’s compositional process and expands our understanding of his musical output.”

Malta’s musical heritage is rich and diverse, with influences from its Mediterranean neighbors and former colonial powers. From the traditional Maltese folk songs to the operatic arias that once filled the Teatru Manoel, music has always played a central role in Maltese culture. This latest discovery serves as a reminder of that heritage and it.

Preserving and Sharing the Treasure

The National Library of Malta is now working with Dr. Bertrand and local music experts to authenticate the manuscript and preserve it for future generations. Once authenticated, the aria will be digitized and made available online, allowing music lovers worldwide to appreciate and perform this lost Mozart masterpiece.

“This is not just a treasure for Malta or France,” says Dr. Bertrand. “It’s a treasure for the world. And we’re thrilled to be able to share it with everyone.”
