Trump’s Photo Claim Sparks Malta-Italy Diplomatic Row

Trump’s Photo Claim: A Storm in a Teacup or a Diplomatic Gaffe?

Malta’s Republic Street, usually bustling with tourists and locals alike, has seen a different kind of buzz this week. The tiny island nation found itself at the centre of a diplomatic storm, all thanks to a claim by former US President Donald Trump.

Trump’s Claim: A Photo ‘Begged’ For

In his latest social media post, Trump claimed that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni “begged” him for a photo during their meeting at the G20 summit. The claim, made without any substantiating evidence, has sparked a diplomatic crisis, with Meloni’s office swiftly denying the allegation.

Malta’s Stance: Neutral but Concerned

Malta, known for its neutrality, has found itself in an awkward position. While officially remaining neutral, diplomatic sources in Valletta express concern over the potential damage to bilateral relations. “We’re watching closely,” a source told Hot Malta, “We value our relationships with both the US and Italy.”

Locally, the incident has sparked debate. “It’s a storm in a teacup,” says Joseph, a retired diplomat from Msida. “But it’s a teacup that could spill over into more serious issues.”

Meanwhile, the US Embassy in Malta has remained silent on the matter, referring queries to the White House. The Italian Embassy in Valletta, however, has issued a statement reaffirming Italy’s commitment to its international partnerships.
