Xewkija’s Rotunda Ready for St John’s Feast

As the sun sets over the picturesque village of Xewkija, a sense of anticipation fills the air. The reason? The much-awaited completion of the Rotunda’s restoration, just in time for the annual feast of St John the Baptist. This isn’t just any feast; it’s a celebration that brings the community together, and this year, it’s set to be even more special.

From Ruins to Resplendence

The Rotunda, a landmark of Xewkija, has stood as a symbol of the village’s faith and history for centuries. However, time and the elements had taken their toll, leaving the once majestic structure in a state of disrepair. But thanks to a dedicated team of restorers and the support of the local council, the Rotunda has been given a new lease of life.

Work began on the restoration project in 2019, with the aim of preserving the Rotunda’s architectural heritage while also ensuring its safety and accessibility. The project, funded by the Malta Government’s Cultural Heritage Fund, has seen the restoration of the Rotunda’s dome, the repair of its damaged walls, and the installation of a new lighting system that will illuminate the structure at night.

A Feast of Celebration

The feast of St John the Baptist is more than just a religious celebration in Xewkija. It’s a time for the community to come together, to share food, music, and laughter. This year, the completion of the Rotunda’s restoration will add an extra layer of significance to the festivities. The restored structure will serve as a stunning backdrop to the traditional fireworks display, a sight that’s not to be missed.

But the Rotunda isn’t the only attraction in Xewkija during the feast. The village’s narrow streets will be filled with the aroma of traditional Maltese food, from ‘qassata’ to ‘imqadded’ and ‘torta tal-marmor’, all made by local families. There will be traditional Gozitan music, played on the ‘fidda’ and ‘zummara’, and the streets will come alive with the rhythm of the ‘għana’ singing.

The completion of the Rotunda’s restoration is not just a cause for celebration in Xewkija, but a testament to the power of community and heritage. It’s a reminder that with dedication and perseverance, even the most daunting tasks can be achieved. As we look ahead to the feast of St John the Baptist, we can’t help but feel a sense of pride and excitement. Not just for the celebration, but for the future of Xewkija and its heritage.

So, mark your calendars for the 24th of June. Join us in Xewkija as we celebrate the feast of St John the Baptist, and bear witness to the beauty and resilience of our heritage. After all, it’s not just about preserving the past; it’s about building a future that honours it.
