Fire Guts Derelict Paceville Nightclub

Blaze Engulfs Former Paceville Nightclub

In the early hours of Tuesday, a fire broke out at the derelict former nightclub, The Lido, in Paceville, sending plumes of smoke into the night sky and causing concern among nearby residents.

Firefighters Battle the Blaze

The Malta Fire Service received a call at around 3:30 AM, dispatching multiple units to the scene. Upon arrival, firefighters found the abandoned building well alight, with flames visible from the nearby streets. It took them several hours to bring the fire under control and eventually extinguish it.

No injuries were reported, but the fire caused significant damage to the building’s structure. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Paceville’s Changing scene

Once a thriving hub of Malta’s nightlife, Paceville has seen a decline in recent years, with many clubs and bars closing down. The Lido, which closed its doors in 2016, is one of several derelict buildings in the area, raising concerns about urban decay and safety.

Local residents have long been calling for action to address the issue. “It’s not just about the eyesore,” said Joe, a resident who wished to remain anonymous, “These buildings can be dangerous. We’ve had squatters and vagrants using them, and now we’ve had a fire. Something needs to be done.”

In the wake of the fire, calls have intensified for the government to take action. “We need to see these buildings either demolished or repurposed,” said Adrian Delia, Opposition Leader. “They’re a blot on our scene and a danger to our community.”
