Fire Guts Former Paceville Nightclub

In the early hours of Monday, the once-thriving nightlife hub of Paceville was shaken by an unexpected blaze. The former Café del Mar nightclub, now a shell of its former glory, was engulfed in flames, sending a plume of smoke into the night sky, visible even from the nearby St. Julian’s Bay.

Firefighters Battle the Blaze

The Malta Fire Authority (MFA) received the call at around 3:30 AM. Within minutes, fire engines from nearby stations, including those from Msida and Gżira, rushed to the scene. The firefighters, equipped with breathing apparatus, battled the inferno for over two hours before managing to bring it under control.

No injuries were reported, but the building suffered significant damage. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, with authorities not ruling out foul play.

Paceville’s Changing scene

This fire is the latest incident in a series of changes Paceville has undergone in recent years. Once the island’s premier nightlife destination, the area has seen a decline in its popularity, with many clubs and bars closing or relocating. The former Café del Mar, which closed its doors in 2019, has been a symbol of this shift.

Local residents and business owners have long called for a revamp of Paceville, hoping to transform it into a more family-friendly and diverse entertainment hub. This fire, they hope, could be a catalyst for much-needed change.

: Paceville’s Future

Paceville’s local council has already started discussions with relevant authorities and stakeholders to plan the area’s regeneration. They aim to create a more balanced mix of businesses, including restaurants, cafes, and shops, to attract a wider range of visitors.

Councilor for Local Government and Communities, Alex Muscat, stated, “This incident is a wake-up call. We must seize this opportunity to reimagine Paceville, making it a safer, more inclusive space for everyone.”
