Francesca Curmi Claims ITF Title in Ta’ Qali Upset

In an electrifying upset, Malta’s own Francesca Curmi, ranked 252nd, has defeated Russian seventh-seed Valeria Ibragimova to claim the ITF Women’s World Tennis Tour title at the National Tennis Academy in Ta’ Qali. The 21-year-old Maltese sensation triumphed 6-4, 6-4 in a thrilling final that had local fans on the edge of their seats.

Curmi’s Cinderella Run

Curmi’s journey to the title was nothing short of remarkable. She started the tournament as a qualifier, having to win three matches just to reach the main draw. But the Maltese player, trained at the very same Ta’ Qali courts, was undeterred. She went on to beat higher-ranked players, including fourth-seed Anastasia Zaryckova from Ukraine, en route to the final.

Defying the Odds against Ibragimova

The final against Ibragimova was a tense affair. The Russian, with her powerful groundstrokes and aggressive game, was the clear favourite. But Curmi, with her tenacious defence and clever shot-making, refused to back down. She broke Ibragimova’s serve twice in each set, displaying remarkable composure and resilience under pressure.

“I can’t believe it,” Curmi said after the match, her voice still filled with disbelief. “To win here, in front of my home crowd, it’s a dream come true.”

Celebrations in Ta’ Qali

The victory was met with jubilant celebrations at the National Tennis Academy. Fans, many of whom had been following Curmi’s progress throughout the tournament, rushed onto the court to congratulate the new champion. The scene was a testament to the passion and support for local sport in Malta.

For Curmi, this victory is a significant stepping stone in her career. It’s her first ITF title and will see her ranking rise significantly. It also provides a much-needed boost for Maltese tennis, showing that world-class talent can indeed emerge from the small Mediterranean island.

“This win means everything to me,” Curmi said. “It shows that with hard work and dedication, anything is possible. I hope it inspires more young Maltese players to pick up a racket and dream big.”
