Malta Fights Back: Dealing with Extremists in Our Midst

Imagine strolling down Strait Street, the heart of Malta’s vibrant nightlife, only to find it eerily quiet, its usually bustling bars and restaurants replaced by a heavy police presence. This was the scene in late 2021 when extremist groups clashed, leaving locals and tourists alike wondering, “What’s happening to our peaceful island?”

Understanding the Extremist Presence in Malta

Malta, known for its sun-soaked beaches and historic sites, has long been a beacon of peace and tolerance. However, like many European countries, it’s not immune to extremist ideologies. The recent clashes involve far-right groups, fueled by online radicalization and a backlash against immigration and cultural changes.

According to Dr. Maria Pisani, a sociologist at the University of Malta, “Extremist groups are exploiting economic insecurities and cultural anxieties. They’re a small but vocal minority, but their actions can have a significant impact on our society.”

Dealing with Extremism: A Local Approach

Malta’s government has been proactive in tackling extremism. In 2019, it launched a National Action Plan to Counter Terrorism and Radicalisation, focusing on prevention, prosecution, and protection. But what can we, as locals, do to help?

Educate Yourself: Understand the signs of radicalization. The University of Malta’s Centre for Resilience and Well-being offers workshops on this topic. Remember, extremist groups often target vulnerable individuals, like the unemployed or those feeling marginalized.

Report Suspicious Activity: If you suspect someone is being radicalized or planning extremist activities, report it to the police. You can remain anonymous. The police have a dedicated hotline – 119.

Promote Inclusion: Extremist groups thrive on division. Counter this by promoting inclusivity. This could be as simple as inviting a neighbor from a different cultural background for coffee, or encouraging your local school to host cultural events.

: Malta’s Resilience

Malta has weathered storms before – from the Great Siege to World War II. Each time, it has emerged stronger, more united. The recent extremist clashes are a challenge, but they’re also an opportunity for us to reaffirm our commitment to tolerance and diversity.

As Malta’s Prime Minister, Robert Abela, recently stated, “We will not let extremists define us. We are a nation of peace, love, and unity.” Let’s ensure that, together, we keep Malta that way.
