Malta: Why Tomorrow’s Skills Can’t Wait

Picture this: Malta’s bustling Strait Street, once a red-light district, now a vibrant hub of cafes and bars. Among the chatter and clinking glasses, a group of students huddle over laptops, not for a study break, but to learn coding. This is not just a scene from a tech-savvy future; it’s happening today, driven by the urgent need to equip our youth with skills for tomorrow’s job market.

Malta’s Skills Gap: A Growing Concern

Malta’s economy is booming, with tech and gaming industries leading the charge. Yet, our education system is struggling to keep pace. According to a 2021 report by the Malta Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise and Industry, 70% of local businesses face skills shortages. The gap is widest in tech, with 87% of employers struggling to fill vacancies.

Future-Proofing Our Youth: The Case for Early Intervention

So, what’s the solution? Waiting for our education system to catch up isn’t an option. We need to start future-proofing our youth now. That’s where initiatives like CodeMalta come in. This non-profit teaches coding to students as young as 8, bridging the gap between what’s taught in schools and what’s needed in the job market.

CodeMalta’s co-founder, Alexiei Dingli, puts it succinctly: “We’re preparing kids for jobs that don’t exist yet. By teaching them to code, we’re teaching them to think logically, solve problems, and adapt – skills that are invaluable in any field.”

Upskilling the Workforce: A Collective Responsibility

It’s not just about our youth, though. Malta’s workforce also needs to upskill. The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2020 predicts that by 2025, 85 million jobs may be displaced by automation, but 97 million new jobs could be created. The key? Reskilling and upskilling the existing workforce.

Government initiatives like the Skills Development Fund and the Malta Digital Innovation Authority are steps in the right direction. But businesses also have a role to play. They can invest in training, offer apprenticeships, and foster a culture of lifelong learning.
