Malta’s Green Revolution: New Solar Farm and EV Charging Stations Unveiled
Imagine standing at the edge of Marsaxlokk’s picturesque harbour, the sun’s rays dancing on the water, and knowing that some of that energy is now being harnessed to power Malta. This isn’t a scene from a futuristic film, but a reality thanks to two significant announcements made on June 21, 2026.
Malta’s Largest Solar Farm to Rise in Delimara
In a bid to reduce its dependence on imported energy, Malta has announced plans for its largest solar farm yet. Spread over 40 hectares in Delimara, the new solar farm will generate enough clean energy to power approximately 10,000 homes. The project, a joint venture between Enemalta and a leading European renewable energy company, is set to commence later this year and is expected to be operational by 2028.
“This is a significant step towards our goal of having 20% of our energy from renewable sources by 2030,” said Minister for Energy and Water Management, Dr. Michael Farrugia. “We’re not just talking about it, we’re doing it.”
Electric Vehicle Revolution: 100 New Charging Stations Across Malta
In tandem with the solar farm announcement, Transport Malta revealed plans to install 100 new electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the island. This ambitious project, part of the government’s ‘Malta Electrifies’ initiative, aims to make Malta one of the most EV-friendly islands in Europe.
The new charging stations, a mix of fast and rapid chargers, will be strategically placed along major roads and in popular locations such as Valletta’s Republic Street, Sliema’s The Strand, and even at the iconic Blue Grotto in Żurrieq. This extensive network will allow EV owners to travel seamlessly across the island.
“We want to make it as easy and convenient to own and drive an electric vehicle as it is to own and drive a conventional car,” said Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects, Dr. Ian Borg. “Today’s announcement is a significant milestone in achieving that goal.”
