Malta’s New Bus Route: A Boost for Connectivity or a Recipe for Gridlock?
Traffic Snarls as New Bus Route Unveiled
Commuters in Malta braced for a morning of gridlock today as the Public Transport Services announced a new bus route, set to take effect from June 22, 2026. The new route, which will connect Msida to Żabbar via Valletta, has sparked both excitement and trepidation among residents, with many wondering how the additional traffic will impact the already congested roads.
New Route to Boost Connectivity
The new bus route, dubbed ‘Route 55’, is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to improve public transport connectivity and reduce traffic congestion. The route will serve several key locations, including the University of Malta in Msida, the historic city center of Valletta, and the bustling shopping district of Żabbar. Transport Minister, Dr. Ian Borg, expressed his optimism about the new route, stating, “Route 55 will significantly improve connectivity between these key areas, benefiting both residents and tourists alike.”
Commuters Weigh In
Reactions from commuters have been mixed. While some welcome the increased connectivity, others are concerned about the potential traffic issues. “I live in Żabbar and work in Msida,” said Maria, a 35-year-old marketing executive. “I’m excited about the new route, but I’m also worried about the traffic. I hope the government has a plan to manage it.”
Meanwhile, John, a 55-year-old retiree from Valletta, is looking forward to the new route. “I love exploring Żabbar’s markets. Now, I won’t have to rely on my son to drive me there,” he said with a chuckle.
Preparing for the Changes
The Public Transport Services have assured the public that they are prepared for the launch of Route 55. “We have been working closely with the police to ensure a smooth transition,” said a spokesperson for the PTS. “We encourage all commuters to familiarize themselves with the new route and timetable, which will be available on our website and mobile app from tomorrow.”
The new Route 55 buses will operate every 30 minutes during peak hours and every hour during off-peak hours. The first bus from Msida will depart at 6:00 AM, with the last bus from Żabbar scheduled to depart at 11:00 PM.
