Paraglider Injured at Dingli Cliffs: A Reminder of Extreme Sports’ Risks

Emergency services rushed to the iconic Dingli Cliffs yesterday afternoon following a paragliding incident that left a man injured. The 35-year-old, a local enthusiast, was attempting a launch from the popular take-off point when his paraglider malfunctioned, resulting in a hard landing.

Rescue Operation at Dingli

The Malta Civil Protection Department received the call around 3 PM. They swiftly deployed their rescue team, who abseiled down the 200-meter high cliffs to reach the injured paraglider. The man was airlifted to Mater Dei Hospital by a Maltese Air Force helicopter, with reports indicating non-life-threatening injuries.

Paragliding in Malta: A Growing Sport

Paragliding has gained popularity in Malta over the years, with Dingli Cliffs being one of the top spots for enthusiasts. The cliffs, located in the outskirts of Rabat, offer stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea and the Maltese countryside. However, incidents like these serve as reminders of the sport’s inherent risks.

Malta Paragliding Club, based at Ta’ Qali, has been advocating for safety measures and regulations in the sport. Club President, Mario Azzopardi, commented, “We urge all pilots to adhere to safety protocols and always check weather conditions before flying. Dingli Cliffs can be challenging, and only experienced pilots should attempt launches from there.”

Investigation Underway

The Malta Civil Aviation Directorate is currently investigating the incident. They have not yet released an official statement but have confirmed that they are looking into the cause of the paraglider malfunction.

This incident comes just months after the Malta Paragliding Club successfully hosted the European Paragliding Championships in November 2021, further cementing Malta’s reputation as a destination for extreme sports.
