Dramatic Rescue at Dingli

Witnesses described seeing the paraglider spiraling out of control before crashing into the rugged terrain below. The cliffs, located in the limits of Rabat and Siggiewi, are a popular spot for extreme sports enthusiasts, offering stunning views of the Mediterranean and the surrounding countryside.

Rescue services, including the Civil Protection Department and the Armed Forces of Malta, swiftly responded to the emergency. They managed to reach the injured glider, who was then airlifted to Mater Dei Hospital for treatment. His condition is currently stable, although serious.

Paragliding in Malta: A Growing Sport

Paragliding has gained popularity in Malta over the years, with Dingli Cliffs being one of the most popular launch sites. The sport attracts both locals and tourists, drawn to the island’s unique geography and mild climate. However, incidents like this serve as a stark reminder of the risks involved.

Malta Paragliding Club, one of the island’s leading paragliding organizations, has expressed its concern over the incident. A spokesperson stated, “Our thoughts are with the injured glider and his family. We urge all pilots to prioritize safety and follow established protocols.”

Safety Measures and Regulations

Malta’s Civil Aviation Directorate regulates paragliding activities. Pilots must obtain a permit and adhere to strict safety guidelines. These include avoiding flights during unfavourable weather conditions and maintaining a safe distance from built-up areas and other aircraft.

Despite these measures, accidents can happen. In 2019, another paraglider crashed at Dingli Cliffs, highlighting the need for continued vigilance and safety education. The Malta Paragliding Club offers training courses for both beginners and experienced pilots, emphasizing the importance of safety and responsible flying.
