AFM Drug Heist Suspect Jailed Over Pepper Spray Use in Ħamrun
In an unexpected turn of events, a suspect in the AFM drug heist case found himself behind bars this week, not for his alleged role in the high-profile theft, but for using pepper spray during a heated Ħamrun altercation.
From Drug Heist to Street Altercation
The suspect, a 32-year-old man from Ħamrun, was arrested on Tuesday following an incident on Triq San Girgor, a bustling street in the heart of the town. According to eyewitnesses, the man used pepper spray during a heated argument with another individual, causing temporary chaos in the usually peaceful area.
While the incident itself was unrelated to the AFM drug heist case, it’s the man’s alleged involvement in the latter that has drawn attention to the former. The suspect is one of several individuals arrested in connection with the theft of drugs from the Armed Forces of Malta’s (AFM) depot in Hal Far last year.
Pepper Spray: A Double-Edged Sword
Pepper spray, a popular self-defense tool, can quickly escalate or de-escalate a situation, depending on how it’s used. In this case, it seems to have escalated an already tense situation, leading to the suspect’s arrest. The use of pepper spray is regulated in Malta, and it’s illegal to carry it without a valid reason and a permit.
Inspector Joe Mifsud of the Ħamrun Police Station commented, “Pepper spray can be a useful tool for self-defense, but it should only be used when absolutely necessary. In this case, we believe it was used recklessly, causing unnecessary distress and chaos.”
: The Drug Heist Case Continues
The AFM drug heist case remains under investigation, with several suspects still facing charges. The recent incident involving pepper spray is a reminder that even those accused of serious crimes can find themselves in trouble over seemingly minor incidents.
As for the pepper spray incident, the suspect is expected to appear in court soon to answer charges of affray and illegal possession of a weapon. Meanwhile, the AFM continues to tighten its security measures to prevent any future incidents.
