Libyan Coastguard Boat Undergoes Repairs in Malta

In the heart of the Mediterranean, Malta’s Grand Harbour has seen its fair share of vessels, but none quite like the Libyan coastguard patrol boat that’s been undergoing repairs here. The boat, named ‘Al Khums’, has been a familiar sight in the Three Cities’ marina, drawing curious glances from locals and tourists alike.

From Libya to Malta: A Boat’s Journey

The ‘Al Khums’ is no ordinary boat. It’s a 45-meter-long, high-speed patrol boat, designed to navigate the rough seas of the Mediterranean. It’s been in Malta since late last year, seeking repairs at the Grand Harbour’s renowned shipyards. The boat’s journey from Libya to Malta is a testament to the island’s reputation as a hub for maritime services.

Malta’s Maritime Expertise on Display

Malta’s shipyards have a long history, dating back to the Knights of St. John. Today, they’re equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and staffed by highly skilled workers. The ‘Al Khums’ repair job is a showcase of Malta’s maritime expertise. The boat’s engine, electronics, and even its bulletproof glass have been serviced or replaced by local companies.

One such company is Malta Marine Services, based in the Marsa Industrial Estate. Their managing director, Joe Attard, told Hot Malta, “We’re proud to be part of this project. It’s not every day we get to work on a Libyan coastguard boat. It’s a testament to Malta’s capabilities in the maritime sector.”

Beyond Repairs: Diplomatic Ties Strengthened

The ‘Al Khums’ repair job has also strengthened diplomatic ties between Malta and Libya. Malta’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Evarist Bartolo, visited the boat earlier this year, expressing Malta’s commitment to supporting Libya’s stability and security.

Libya’s Ambassador to Malta, Omar Alshibani, echoed these sentiments, “Malta’s support in maintaining our coastguard fleet is invaluable. It’s a practical demonstration of the strong ties between our two countries.”

The ‘Al Khums’ is expected to leave Malta’s waters in the coming weeks, ready to resume its patrols off the coast of Libya. Its departure will mark the end of an unusual but significant chapter in Malta’s maritime history.
