Malta’s Invisible Art: Unblinking at St. James Cavalier

Ever wondered what lies beyond the visible? In the heart of Valletta, at the historic St. James Cavalier, an exhibition titled ‘Unblinking’ is pushing the boundaries of perception. This isn’t your typical art show; it’s an invitation to see beyond the surface, to explore the unseen, and to question what we think we know.

Unblinking: More Than Meets the Eye

‘Unblinking’ is the brainchild of local artist and innovator, Mark Mifsud. Mark, a Valletta native, has always been fascinated by the city’s hidden layers. “Valletta is like an onion,” he says, “peel back one layer, and you find another. I wanted to create an exhibition that reflects this, that makes people look twice, and then again.”

The exhibition features a mix of installations, interactive pieces, and thought-provoking artworks. Each piece is designed to challenge our perceptions, to make us question what we’re seeing. Take, for instance, ‘Echoes of Time’, a piece that plays with light and shadow to create the illusion of a moving image on a static surface. It’s a visual trick that’s as mesmerizing as it is deceiving.

Unblinking: A Local Perspective

What makes ‘Unblinking’ particularly interesting is its local context. Many of the pieces are inspired by Malta’s rich history and culture. ‘The Silent City’, for example, is a sound installation that uses field recordings from Valletta’s streets to create a haunting, otherworldly soundscape. It’s a reminder of the city’s vibrant past, and a poignant reflection on the passage of time.

But ‘Unblinking’ isn’t just about looking back. It’s also about looking forward, about using art to explore the future. ‘The Unseen City’, a collaborative piece by Mark and local architect Alex Torpiano, uses virtual reality to imagine Valletta’s future. It’s a bold, thought-provoking piece that asks us to consider what our city might look like in years to come.

Mark’s hope is that ‘Unblinking’ will inspire a new way of seeing, not just in Valletta, but in Malta as a whole. “We’re so used to seeing things in a certain way,” he says. “But if we can learn to look again, to really see, then maybe we can start to understand our world in a deeper, more meaningful way.”
