Malta’s June 21 Announcements: Light Rail, Cultural Hub, Comino Marina

As the sun rose over the Grandmaster’s Palace on a crisp June morning, Malta woke up to a flurry of announcements that promised to reshape its future. From the bustling streets of Valletta to the quiet corners of Rabat, the island was abuzz with news that would impact everything from infrastructure to culture.

New Light Rail System for Malta

The most anticipated announcement came from the Ministry of Transport, revealing plans for a state-of-the-art light rail system. Set to connect major towns and cities, including Sliema, St. Julian’s, and Msida, the project aims to alleviate traffic congestion and reduce carbon emissions. The route, which will pass through the picturesque Msida Creek, is expected to be operational by 2030.

Transport Minister, Michael Falzon, stated, “This is a significant step towards a more sustainable future for Malta. The light rail system will not only improve our public transport network but also enhance our urban scene.”

Cultural Hub in Rabat’s Heart

In a move that delighted art enthusiasts, the government announced plans to transform a disused building in Rabat’s historic centre into a vibrant cultural hub. The space, located just off St. Paul’s Street, will house an art gallery, a community theatre, and a café. The project, led by the Malta Arts Council, aims to breathe new life into the area while preserving its rich heritage.

Council Chairperson, Maria Grech Ganado, commented, “We’re excited to turn this vacant space into a thriving cultural hub. It’s a perfect example of how we can celebrate our past while looking towards the future.”

Eco-Tourism Boost with Comino’s New Marina

Comino, the tiny island between Malta and Gozo, will soon become more accessible with the construction of a new marina. The project, a joint venture between the Malta Tourism Authority and a private developer, will cater to eco-tourism enthusiasts, providing mooring facilities for yachts and small cruise ships.

MTA CEO, Carlo Micallef, explained, “Comino’s unique ecosystem makes it an ideal destination for eco-tourism. This marina will allow visitors to explore the island’s beauty while minimizing environmental impact.”
