Malta’s New Bus Network: Smooth Sailing or Bumpy Ride?
Traffic Snarls as New Bus Routes Kick Off
It’s 7:30 AM on June 21, 2026, and the usually bustling Republic Street in Valletta is a symphony of honking horns. The cause? A sudden reroute of bus services, announced just yesterday. Malta Public Transport (MPT) has unveiled a new network, and commuters are feeling the pinch.
MPT’s Big Reveal
In a press conference held at the MPT headquarters in Ħamrun, CEO David Zammit announced the revamped bus network. The new system, dubbed ‘MaltaGo’, promises faster journeys, increased frequency, and better connectivity. It’s a bold step towards improving public transport on the island, but the transition has been anything but smooth.
One of the most significant changes is the rerouting of several bus services through new hubs in Birkirkara and Msida. While this is expected to ease congestion in central areas like Valletta and Sliema, commuters are currently grappling with longer travel times and confusion over the new routes.
Commuters’ Woes and Official Response
Commuters across Malta are voicing their frustrations. “I’ve been stuck in traffic for an hour,” says Maria, a nurse at Mater Dei Hospital. “I usually take the 125 from Żebbuġ, but now it goes through Birkirkara. I’m going to be late for my shift.”
MPT, however, is standing by its decision. “We understand the initial inconvenience,” says Zammit. “But MaltaGo is a long-term investment in our public transport system. We’re asking commuters to bear with us as we iron out these teething problems.”
The MPT has also set up a 24/7 helpline (506 2020) and is deploying additional staff at bus termini to assist passengers during the transition.
if MaltaGo will indeed transform public transport in Malta. For now, though, it’s a case of hold on tight and expect some bumpy rides.
