Malta’s New Bus Routes: Smooth Sailing or Rough Ride?
Traffic Snarls as New Bus Routes Take Effect Today
As the sun rose over the bustling streets of Ħamrun this morning, commuters were greeted with a new reality. The long-awaited revamp of Malta’s public transport system has finally kicked in, with new bus routes and schedules taking effect. But as many Ħamrun residents and commuters discovered, change isn’t always smooth sailing.
What’s Changed?
The new system, dubbed ‘MaltaBus 2.0’, promises improved connectivity and reduced travel times. Key changes include:
- New express routes, like the X1 from Ħamrun to St. Julian’s, designed to cut down on travel time for commuters.
- Revised schedules, with buses running later on weekends to cater to Malta’s vibrant nightlife.
- An increased bus frequency during peak hours to tackle overcrowding.
Growing Pains
However, the transition hasn’t been without its hiccups. Many commuters found themselves waiting longer than usual for their buses, while others ended up on the wrong route due to the changes. Traffic congestion also increased in areas like Ħamrun and Msida, as drivers navigated the new traffic patterns.
At the Ħamrun Terminus, commuter Joe Borg grumbled, “I’ve been waiting 20 minutes for the number 2, and I’ve missed my stop already. I hope this is just teething problems.”
Malta Public Transport, the entity behind the revamp, assures the public that these initial glitches are to be expected. “We’re monitoring the situation closely,” said spokesperson Maria Attard. “We’re committed to ironing out these issues and ensuring that MaltaBus 2.0 delivers on its promise of improved service.”
In the meantime, commuters are advised to check the updated schedules and routes on the Malta Public Transport website or mobile app. And for those experiencing delays, remember: Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither is a smooth public transport system.
