Mqabba Breaks Fireworks Record with 90m Display

In the small, quiet town of Mqabba, nestled in the heart of Malta, a thunderous roar echoed through the night sky last Saturday. It wasn’t a storm, but a spectacle of light and colour, as local fireworks enthusiasts claimed they set a new record with a 90-metre high display.

Shooting for the Stars

Organised by the Mqabba Local Council and the Mqabba Fireworks Display Committee, the event drew thousands of spectators to the town’s main square. The display, a culmination of months of preparation, was designed to break the previous record of 85 metres set in 2019. The committee, led by chairman Joseph Farrugia, was confident of success, having invested in larger, more powerful fireworks and meticulous planning.

“We’ve been preparing for this for a long time,” Farrugia said, his voice still hoarse from the night’s excitement. “We wanted to give Mqabba and Malta something to be proud of, something to remember.”

Malta’s Pyrotechnic Passion

Malta’s love affair with fireworks is legendary. From the traditional ‘Festa’ celebrations honouring patron saints to New Year’s Eve extravaganzas, fireworks are ingrained in the island’s culture. Mqabba, however, is no ordinary town when it comes to pyrotechnics. It’s home to the annual ‘Mqabba International Fireworks Festival’, attracting international teams and drawing thousands of visitors each year.

But this record-breaking display was different. It was a testament to local skill and passion, a challenge taken up by Mqabba’s enthusiasts to push the boundaries of what’s possible. “It’s not just about the size,” said committee member Maria Grech. “It’s about the artistry, the precision, the emotion we put into each explosion.”

Measuring Success

The record attempt was verified by a team of international judges, including representatives from the UK’s Pyrotechnicians Association and the Italian National Fireworks Association. Using advanced laser technology, they measured the height of the display, confirming it reached an astonishing 90 metres.

News of the record spread quickly, sparking joy and pride among Mqabba’s residents and Malta’s fireworks community. “This is what we do it for,” said Farrugia, smiling. “To see the joy on people’s faces, to know we’ve given them something to remember. That’s our reward.”

As for the future, the committee is already . “We’ve set the bar high,” said Grech, laughing. “Now we have to reach for the stars again.”
