Mqabba’s Record-Breaking Fireworks Display

Imagine standing on Triq il-Kbira in Mqabba, the cool night air filled with anticipation, as the clock strikes 10 pm. Suddenly, the sky erupts into a symphony of colour and light, a spectacle so immense it’s hard to believe it’s not a Hollywood special effect. This was the scene on Saturday night, as Mqabba’s fireworks enthusiasts claimed they’ve set a new record with a 90-metre display.

From Backyards to World Records

Mqabba, a small village in the heart of Malta, has long been known for its love affair with fireworks. What started as backyard tinkering has evolved into a global phenomenon, with Mqabba’s fireworks displays drawing crowds from across the island and beyond. But this year, the villagers have outdone themselves, aiming for a spot in the Guinness World Records with their 90-metre display.

Crafting a Sky-High Spectacle

To achieve this feat, the Mqabba Fireworks Committee, led by the indefatigable Joe Camilleri, has been working tirelessly for months. They’ve sourced special pyrotechnics from Italy, designed intricate firing sequences, and even built a custom launch platform to reach the record-breaking height. The display, titled ‘Mqabba Skies’, is a culmination of their hard work and passion.

But it’s not just about the record. For the Mqabba community, fireworks are a labour of love, a tradition that brings the village together. “It’s more than just fireworks,” says Camilleri. “It’s about community, about pride in our village, and about creating something beautiful for everyone to enjoy.”

The record attempt is still under review by Guinness, but regardless of the outcome, Mqabba has once again proven itself a force to be reckoned with in the world of pyrotechnics. And as for the villagers, they’re already planning next year’s display. After all, in Mqabba, the sky’s not the limit – it’s just the starting point.
