Unblinking: Uncovering Malta’s Hidden Stories
Imagine walking down Republic Street in Valletta, the sun casting a golden glow on the historic buildings, and suddenly, you notice something you’ve never seen before. A hidden door, a secret pattern in the stone, a face in the architecture. This is what the ‘Unblinking’ project is all about – seeing beyond the visible, uncovering the stories hidden in plain sight.
Unveiling the Unseen
The ‘Unblinking’ project is the brainchild of local artist and urban explorer, Matthew Attard. Armed with a camera and an insatiable curiosity, Matthew has spent years documenting the overlooked and the forgotten, transforming our everyday landscapes into a treasure trove of discovery.
“Malta is like an open-air museum,” Matthew explains, “but we often miss the details. ‘Unblinking’ is about training our eyes to see the extraordinary in the ordinary.”
From Street Art to History
Matthew’s work spans from capturing the intricate details of street art in areas like St. Julian’s to unearthing historical gems in the silent streets of Rabat. His lens has immortalized the fading beauty of traditional Maltese doors and the stark contrast of modern architecture against ancient city walls.
But ‘Unblinking’ is more than just a photography project. It’s a call to action, encouraging us to look up, to notice, to appreciate. “Next time you’re walking down Triq San Gwann or past the Grandmaster’s Palace,” Matthew challenges, “take a moment to really see what’s around you. You might be surprised what you find.”
Joining the Journey
Matthew’s work is not just about him; it’s about us. He invites everyone to share their own discoveries using the hashtag #UnblinkingMalta. From a unique perspective on the Three Cities to a quirky detail in your neighborhood, every contribution adds a layer to our collective visual history.
“‘Unblinking’ is about community,” Matthew says, “about coming together to celebrate our shared heritage and our unique perspectives.”
