Blaze Engulfs Abandoned Matches Factory in Marsa

In the early hours of Tuesday morning, the usually quiet streets of Marsa were filled with the distant roar of flames and the wail of sirens as a blaze engulfed an old matches factory on Triq il-Kbira. The fire, which started around 3 AM, sent a towering plume of smoke into the night sky, visible even from nearby towns like Ħamrun and Paola.

Firefighting Efforts

Malta’s firefighters were quick to respond, with five tenders and a foam tender rushing to the scene. They battled the intense flames for hours, eventually managing to bring the fire under control by around 6 AM. The old factory, which has been abandoned for years, was left gutted, its charred remains a stark contrast to the surrounding industrial buildings.

No Injuries Reported

Fortunately, no injuries were reported. The factory, although close to residential areas, was unoccupied at the time of the fire. However, the blaze did cause some concern among nearby residents who were awoken by the commotion. “I woke up to the sound of sirens and saw the smoke,” said a resident from nearby Triq San Ġorġ. “It was quite scary, but thankfully, it seems everyone’s safe.”

Investigation Underway

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Police and experts from the Civil Protection Department are currently examining the site. While it’s too early to draw conclusions, arson is not being ruled out. “We’re treating all possibilities at this stage,” said a police spokesperson.

This incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers of abandoned buildings. While they may seem like relics of the past, they can still pose significant risks. The local council has been urged to address the issue of abandoned properties in Marsa, with some residents suggesting they be repurposed or demolished to prevent such incidents in the future.
