Blaze Engulfs Historic Marsa Factory

In the heart of Marsa, a once-thriving industrial town now known for its shipyards and bustling markets, an old matches factory stood silent and forgotten. Until last night, that is, when a blaze roared to life, drawing firefighters from across the island to tackle the inferno.

Smoke billows over Marsa

The fire, which broke out around 9 PM, sent thick plumes of smoke into the night sky, visible even from Valletta’s Grand Harbour. Residents of nearby streets like Triq San Ġorġ and Triq il-Karmnu watched in awe and concern as flames licked the factory’s crumbling walls.

Firefighters battle the blaze

Malta’s Fire and Rescue Service swiftly deployed resources, with firefighters from Marsa, Paola, and other nearby stations rushing to the scene. They found a challenging situation – the factory’s old structure, combined with strong winds, made containment difficult. Yet, they persevered, their determined efforts eventually bringing the fire under control by the early hours.

No injuries, but a historic building lost

Fortunately, no injuries were reported, although the factory itself was gutted. Built in the late 19th century, it was once a symbol of Malta’s industrial past. Now, it’s a stark reminder of what’s lost when history is left to decay. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Marsa’s local council has already begun discussions on the site’s future. Some suggest it could be transformed into a public space, a nod to the town’s industrial heritage. Others hope it might become a hub for Marsa’s growing arts scene. Whatever the future holds, one thing is clear – Marsa won’t forget the night its past went up in flames.
