Ħal Għaxaq’s Green Revolution: 25,000 sqm Open Space Underway

Ever dreamt of a sprawling green lung in the heart of Malta’s southern region? Well, Ħal Għaxaq is about to get one. Right now, heavy machinery is transforming a 25,000 square metre plot into a public open space that’s set to become the town’s pride and joy.

From Barren Land to Green Oasis

Just a stone’s throw from Ħal Għaxaq’s main square, the site has been a barren patch of land for years. But not anymore. The Ħal Għaxaq Local Council, with the support of the Ministry for Sustainable Development, the Environment and Climate Change, is turning this eyesore into a green oasis.

This isn’t just about planting a few trees and calling it a day. The project, led by architect Alex Torpiano, involves careful planning to create a space that’s not just green, but also functional and inviting. Think walking paths, picnic areas, and even a children’s play area.

More Than Meets the Eye

But it’s not all fun and games. This open space is also a crucial part of Ħal Għaxaq’s wider sustainability efforts. The project includes the planting of native trees and shrubs, which will help absorb carbon dioxide and provide habitats for local wildlife.

the open space will be equipped with rainwater harvesting systems and solar lighting, making it not just a green space, but also a sustainable one. It’s a clear example of how Ħal Għaxaq is committed to making a difference, one project at a time.

What’s Next?

With the initial earthworks and site preparation underway, the next phase will see the planting of trees and the construction of the various amenities. The Ħal Għaxaq Local Council is inviting the community to get involved, with plans to organise tree planting events and other community initiatives.

So, watch this space. Literally. Because Ħal Għaxaq’s new green heart is about to beat a little stronger, and it’s going to be beautiful.
